Kagame to Open 2nd East African
Manufacturing Business Summit (2EAMBS)
- Private Sector to engage Policy Makers on EAC Industrialization Policy Reforms
- Private Sector to share Perspectives on Boosting EAC Industry Value Chains
Arusha, Tanzania: April 13, 2017 –
H.E. Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda has been invited to grace
the official opening ceremony of the 2nd East African Manufacturing
Business Summit that is scheduled
to take place from 23rd to 25th of May 2017 in Kigali, Rwanda.
The
2nd East African Manufacturing Business Summit will attract over
400 stakeholders from public and private sector. Industry round table discussions on Automotive,
Pharmaceutical & Cosmetics, Mining, Cement, Iron & Steel, Chemicals,
Plastics & Paints, Agro-processing & Agri-business; Leather and
Footwear as well as Cotton, Textiles and Apparels value chains will be held.
“Improving
value addition can create more jobs opportunities for citizens, for instance
under the cotton sector only 15% of EAC cotton is processed locally” said Ms.
Lilian Awinja, EABC CEO.
Other
high level dignitaries expected to attend include: Dr. Donald Kaberuka, African
Union Commission; Hon. Liberat Mfumukeko, Secretary General of the EAC as well
as the respective ministers from all EAC partner states, who shall engage the
private sector on critical steps needed to leverage higher levels of investment
in manufacturing.
EABC
Chairman Mr. Audace Ndayizeye; Dr. Manu Chandaria, Chairman Comcraft Group;
Rita Kavashe, MD, General Motors and Mr. John Musunga, CEO GlaxoSmithKline are
among the industry weights who will share private sector
perspectives on industrialization, local content and competiveness with aim to
improve the Manufacturing Business Environment and Investment conditions in EAC
strategic Industries.
“The
Summit recommendations shall be cumulated into position papers that will guide
further advocacy activities aimed to hasten actualization of an industrialized
East African economy by 2032” said Lilian Awinja, EABC CEO.

The East African Manufacturing Business Summit 2017 is co-organized with the East
African Community (EAC) with very strong support from the Rwandan Government.
The event is co-hosted by the East African Business Council (EABC) and the East
African Manufacturing Associations i.e. the Rwanda Association of Manufacturers
(RAM), Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA), Confederation of Tanzania
Industries (CTI), Burundi Manufacturers Association (AIB), and Kenya
Manufacturers Association (KAM).
