East African Manufacturing Summit to discuss Local Content Nexus with EAC

Arusha,
Tanzania: April 20, 2017 – Over
400 stakeholders from public and private sector will deliberate on the nexus
between application of local content requirements and EAC industrialization
during the 2nd East African Manufacturing Summit that is scheduled to take
place from take place from 23rd to 25th of May 2017 in Kigali, Rwanda.
Local content requirements have been used
with varying degrees of success in many countries in the world. Local content
policy requires firms to use at least a specified minimum amount of
domestically produced inputs into their production process with the aim to
enhance domestic industrial base, innovation, transfer of technology,
employment generation, production efficiency and a check against trade
imbalances. Most developed countries have employed local content guidelines to
boost domestic value addition.
“The 2nd East
African Manufacturing Summit provides an avenue for the private sector to share
practical insights on the linkages among local content, domestic value addition
and promotion of industries “said Ms. Lilian Awinja, EABC CEO.
Local content requirements in regard to Public
and Private Procurement of large projects such as infrastructure can create high
demand of locally manufactured products as well as promoting of technology
based business startups.
The 2nd East African
Manufacturing Business Summit also
provides stage for discussion on cross cutting issues related to manufacturing
specifically: finance for manufacturing sector; standards and quality
management; industrial skills, technology & innovation; combatting illicit
trade, product piracy & intellectual property violations and attracting
diaspora investment in the manufacturing sector. Industry round tables on
automotive, agro-processing, food & beverages; mineral processing;
pharmaceuticals; construction materials; fertilizers & agro-chemicals as
well as leather & textiles sectors will also be held.

The East African
Manufacturing Business Summit 2017 is co-organized with the East African
Community (EAC) with very strong support from the Rwandan Government. The event
is co-hosted by the East African Business Council (EABC) and the East African
Manufacturing Associations i.e. the Rwanda Association of Manufacturers (RAM),
Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA), Confederation of Tanzania Industries
(CTI), Burundi Manufacturers Association (AIB), and Kenya Manufacturers
Association (KAM).

enterprises, researchers and academia can collectively showcase new products
and services as well as latest innovations in manufacturing, particularly those
