The EAC Single Custom Territory has lessened documentation says

“We appreciate the efforts the government is undertaking in
facilitating trade” said Mr. Yasin Billo, Export Manager C&F
Said Salim Bakhresa & Co.Ltd, during an interview on the
Single Custom Territory and Authorized Economic Operator at
Bakhresa’s Buguruni Flour Mill, in Dar es Salaam Tanzania.
Mr. Billo elaborated that the Authorized Economic
Operator has improved the efficiency of the company. He recommended
the following to implementation of Authorized Economic Operator and boost intra EAC trade:
· Need
to set up Authorized Economic Operator Special Desk with government agencies at
the borders, to fast track movement of goods
· Capacity
building of customs officials to ease
implementation of Authorized Economic Operator
“The Single Custom Territory has lessened documentation and
duration to export goods to the EAC partner States. Exporting goods from
Tanzania to Burundi and Rwanda has reduced from 5 days to 2 days,"
said Mr. Billo.
Said Salim Bakhresa & Co.Ltd has recently faced
challenges exporting goods to the Republic of Kenya citing that recently,
the Kenya Revenue Authority changed the exporting procedure of charging per
consignment weight to charging per truck. He elaborated that this increases
costs of exporting goods making them uncompetitive in the Kenyan market he
urged for more transparency to reduce Non -Tariff Barriers in the region and
ensure effective implementation of the Single Customs Union.
In her response to the question of expanding to South Sudan
Ms. Hawa Bayuni, Corporate Affairs Manager Said Salim Bakhresa & Co.Ltd
stated that “It depends on our strategies and plans you never know
we may set up an industry plant in South Sudan just as we ventured into
the other EAC Partner States, Uganda and Rwanda which we started by
exporting”

The EABC in collaboration with the East African Community (EAC)
and GIZ is undertaking a media tour to record and publicize the achievements
realized in the Single Customs Territory, Mutual Recognition Agreements and
Pharmaceutical Sector in the Partner States.
The
tour kicked off on 24th September at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha,
Tanzania and will continue until 6th October 2018 in the EAC Partner
States. On 25th October 2018, journalist interviewed key public
officials and companies in Dar es
Salaam, Tanzania.
