EABC IMPROVES THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT IN EAC















Advocacy for a Strong East Africa

The East African Business Council, the Voice of Private Sector in East Africa, undertook a mid-term review of the “Advocacy for a Strong East Africa” project that is supported by the Federation of German Industries (BDI).

Launched in April, 2015 the project aims to support regional economic integration by improving policy advocacy and strengthening linkages between German and East African businesses.
”A stronger EABC is a better case for EAC Integration” Mr. Ansgar Cordier, Consultant from BDI who recalled the rationale for the partnership.

The project has been marked by the significant achievements “EABC successfully developed the EABC Policy Advocacy Agenda 2016/17” said Ms. Lilian Awinja, EABC Executive Director. “EABC Common External Tariff proposals (sugar & iron & Steel sector, paper & paper products)  adopted by EAC Partner States” is a great milestone for EABC.” The EABC Policy Advocacy Agenda contains sectoral issues for advocacy such as Non Tariff Barriers, WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement, Harmonization of Domestic Taxes, Domestication of EAC Air Space, Liberalization of Services, Standards & Technical Regulations and Counterfeit Products.

The project has strengthened EABC advocacy and visibility. Other achievements include   successful convening of   the first East African Entrepreneurship Conference & Exhibition, High Level Engagement with H.E. William Ruto, Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, Participation in 17th Ordinary Summit of EAC Heads of State, Regional Business Leaders’ Summit and the launch of the Regional Code of Conduct.

The EABC Technical Advocacy Coordination Team played a key role in spearheading to advocacy issues for attention to policy makers. “EABC has set out plans for 2017 that aim to improve the Business Environment in EAC and much appreciation to BDI for their tremendous support” stated Ms. Lilian Awinja.
